Interior Decorating Show

I've been doing a lot of graphic design work for the Interior Decorating Show by Showcase Marketing. They also organize the International Home Show, the International Home and Garden Show and the Better Living Boomer Show. After a long break the Interior Decorating Show will open its doors to visitor on October 27 with a trade only day and will continue with three consumer days.The event will take place at the same time as the International Home Show.

I did the show's logo and brochure, and didn't think about exhibiting (since I don't have a brand new collection) until I was offered a complimentary booth. :-) And not only any booth, but a nice one right at the entrance and near the main stage. Now I have to look at the trade show walls I made a couple of years ago and make sure they stand and organize everything for move-in day.

The Peacock wallpaper at the Art Gallery of Greater Victoria

It's been so long that I posted, that I almost forgot how to add a new post. I've been working on a lot of projects while trying to get back on the design horse at the same time.I have a lot of new images to share, amongst them a couple of wallpaper installation photos from Victoria, BC.

Toronto and New York based artist Shelly Bahl chose my wallpaper as part of her installation for an exhibition entitled "Collected Resonance" at the Art Gallery of Greater Victoria. Inspired by a short story about domestic psychological abuse and madness by Charlotta Perkins Gilman, Shelly Bahl explores issues of psychological violence and the historical phenomenon of "female hysteria" in her installation "The Peacock Wallpaper II".
The exhibition also features works by two other South Asian Canadian women artists who gather and create narratives informed by the mythologies and ideologies of their Hindu, Sikh and Muslim heritage.
The "Collected Resonance" will be open to the public between September 23, 2011 and January 8, 2012.

Project Selvage

Well, it's been a while..... Benjamin definitely keeps my hands full, but with this one he actually helped mommy. I decided to enter the Project Selvage baby boy fabric design contest presented by Spoonflower and Michael Miller Fabrics. Out of the 968 entries I made it to the semi finals. Check out the 75 designs by the semi finalists and vote for your favourites!

My entry has a farm theme. Benjamin loves farm animals and loves to imitate the sounds they make. He also loves tractors, anything that has wheels and even heavy machinery (who would have thought that a book full of yellow construction machines would be interesting to a one year old - looks like the most boring book to me...)! When the Bean saw my design, he started making Brrrrmmmm, Brrrrrmmmmm, Mooooo and other sounds. :-) I guess it was approved by him. :-) So, here is my entry:

New Store: The Inside

I was approached by a new store in New Zealand called The Inside. The Inside is a new online store selling designer wallpaper, curtains, cushions and other accessories at great prices.This morning when I visited The Inside's Blog and saw the last blog post, it really made my day. Check out the post!
Being mentioned on the same page with Florence Broadhurst is pretty inspiring. I really needed that! :-) Especially now, when I'm thinking about new designs and trying to fit some design time into my crazy schedule with a baby! Thanks Rebekah!

Pink Flamingo Wallpaper at Roomy

A couple of weeks ago we were at Roomy Interiors to check out their new decor. The store looked gorgeous bursting with colour. The new "Miami Style" included a lot of pinks, and the decor was bright, fun and summery. They used my Pink Flamingo wallpaper on one one the walls. Here are a few pictures.

Red Rococo Rug

I received this picture from Meera, who used a Red Rococo rug in her study. She also wrote me a nice note that made my day: " I am very happy with the rug. My study is so warm and cozy that I actually study in it, unlike before." I'm glad the rug brightens up her living space. Thanks Meera! :-)

Wallpaper - The Ultimate Guide

Yesterday I received the Wallpaper - An Ultimate Guide by Charlotte Abrahams. I was so excited I ripped the packaging open pretty well right after the mailman left. I have two of my wallpaper patterns in the book. What's really cool is, that a German art director saw my Koi fish design in this book and ordered two rolls for a movie called "Unsere Farm in Irland".

I haven't had time to do a lot of design work lately. Benjamin, our Bean is 4 months and a week now, and pretty well taking up my whole day. Today I'm lucky because he's having a good nap, but some days he only sleeps half an hour at a time during the day. Here is a recent picture of him. :-)

Print & Pattern Book

Today I received my order from Amazon with the "Print & Pattern" book in it. A while ago Bowie Style, the writer of Print & Pattern blog asked for submissions for her upcoming book and two of my prints made it! This time we didn't get a free copy of the book, but I didn't mind buying it from Amazon. It's definitely another eye candy! Packed with beautiful patterns for pattern freaks like me. :-) Here are my pages from the book.

I was so excited to receive this cute little book in the mail from Barcelona, and a copy of Elle Decoration from Paris! "Estampados Padroes" is a collection of gorgeous patterns from designers all over the world. I'm proud to be included! The other images are from the French Elle Decoration.

Decorating Resource Studio and Today Wallpaper

My rugs and wallpaper are now available at the newly opened Decorating Resource Studio in London Ontario. If you live in London, you can visit their studio at 24 York Street.

Their products include designer wallcoverings, fabric, lighting, casegoods, custom upholstery, custom area rugs, cabinetry and more. The showroom is available for both trade professionals and the public.

The DRS also organizes professional development days to encourage continuing education. Credits will be available, from some suppliers.

My wallpaper is also available at Today Wallpaper's Hong Kong location. Today Iteriors was established in the UK about 30 years ago and they carry a wide range of fabrics and wallpaper.

I haven't dropped by for a long time... The last couple of months have been insanely busy, with the birth of our baby, the Interior Design Show, moving and new projects.

The IDS went really well. I never made it to the show though. My Honey, Ed did the setup (the same day Benjamin was born) and the tear down and five of my friends helped out at the booth. Thanks again Toni, Gwyneth, Val, Margie and Chamila.

First of all, happy new year to everybody! I hope that 2010 will be a healthy, happy and successful year for all!

In December I had an article on hg.hu, an online magazine by Ombrello Media. Ombrello Media publishes several online magazines on design, architecture and other topics. The article is in Hungarian, and if you're interested you can check it out here.

January will bring an interesting start for the new year. I'm preparing for the Interior Design Show in Toronto, which coincides with the arrival of our first baby. It's going to be hectic, but we're hoping to manage.... Doing a show by itself is stressful, not to mention having a first baby, and the two together will definitely be a challenge.

We had about three photo sessions trying to take good pictures of the new rugs. It's definitely not easy! We've tried inside a dance studio, outside in the yard, hanging the rugs on a T-stand and laying them down on the ground. Sunlight is still the best, but if it's too strong it can drown out the colours. Even with Photoshop it's hard to keep the colours consistent! So far this is what I have. We've just ordered more professional lights, so we might make another jump at the pictures....

New Hand-Knotted Rugs

A couple of days ago I got a phone call from the warehouse, that my new hand-knotted rugs have arrived from India and we had a couple of days to pick them up. Yesterday I did my importing forms (always a challenge) and checked them a million times, so nobody gives me a hard time at customs (something always screws up). With Ed's generous help we went to the warehouse to pick up the papers, then to the customs office to clear the shipment and back to the warehouse to get the rugs. Finally, they're here!

I opened the samples first, because they're small. I'll have to wait to open the big ones when Ed gets home, because my belly sort of gets in the way. I took some pictures of the small, 2x2 samples for a sneak peek. Here they are.

I had these lamps from IKEA for a while. I think I got them for the first One of a Kind Show, where I was exhibiting my fabric greeting cards. Since then they were in storage and nobody really paid attention to them. Last weekend as a mini craft project I decided to use some of my bits and pieces of wallpaper to cover them and they ended up looking great! I used the Dragonfly Red and the Koi Chinoiserie and Koi Lake designs.

Yesterday I was at Roomy Interiors on King Street East to take pictures of the new store. I was really excited, because several of my products were on display. The colours looked amazing and the store looked gorgeous! Here are a few snap shots:

I love the greys and soft greens with yellow accents for this arrangement. The beautiful grey sheets look great with my Sunflower Swirl silk pillows!

Mandy Saile

We spent the long weekend in North Bay, and came back with some goodies from my lovely friend Mandy, creator of Bijou's Whimsy. She has some beautiful new things to offer, amongst them her free standing dolls she calls "Nubbins" and birds. I got this gorgeous bird from her as well as the frog necklace. I'm showing my new treasures with the "Pink Jinny" necklace I received a few months ago.

I also wanted to share a new illustration from Mandy. This one was inspired by me, which is such an honour! It's entitled "I am a Beautiful Home"

Duchess Yellow Wallpaper

Finally, I received my copy of the Hungarian Elle Decor! I was excited to see myself in the "Portrait" section of the August - September edition. This is the first time I appeared in a Hungarian publication. Of course it made my Mom really proud. :-) The article was written in Hungarian by Vanda Hakkel and the photos were taken by Ed.

My Pink Mermaid rug made it into Boutique Design's 2009 Dream Book. I loved the little write up on it. It says: "We've discovered where Ariel makes her money on dry land. She's gracing the face of this Pink Mermaid carpet - or it's her carpet fiber look alike."

Boutique Design is a hospitality interiors magazine that focuses on boutique hotels, spas, restaurants featuring designers with unique products.

They also have a yearly publication called Dream Book where they feature product designers. Check out their issues online here.

Koma Designs

Recently, I became part of Koma Designs Collective. The way it works, is that you pay a monthly fee to rent a small part of the store, where you can sell your designs for retail prices. There are several furniture designers and visual artists who also joined the collective:

Roomy Interiors

I was in Roomy Interiors a few days ago and they had the Grey Mermaid rug on display. It was a beautiful sunny day, so the light was quite strong, but you can still see the rug. It looks beautiful with the blue accessories and white couch.

Graphic Design - WWFA

I've been working on a few graphic design projects. Here is one I completed lately for the Walls Windows Furnishings Association (WWFA) - www.wwwfa.org. I designed marketing materials, that included business cards, post cards, a poster to be displayed at Designers Walk, and a standing banner to be displayed at trade shows. They wanted to keep the colours consistent with their website and keep it simple but sophisticated.

Illustrated Necklaces from Mandy Saile

Today I'd like to show some beautiful new necklaces from my dear friend, illustrator Mandy Saile - one of the most creative people I've ever met. Mandy mounts images of her original coloured pencil illustrations on bamboo tiles, and adds glass beads to create dazzling results. Each necklace is packaged in a beautiful little organza bag with a personal note from the artist. The necklaces make gorgeous one of a kind gifts. I definitely have my favourite! :-) Which one do you like?

Interior Design Show

The IDS2009 was a great experience! Here is a little summary of the show days: Setting up was pretty smooth, thanks to my friend Jodi Sinden. She helped me haul the wall panels, rugs, and drove the Sprinter we rented from Budget. Thanks again Jodi! :-)

The show started on February 5th with the opening gala "AMUSE", which was really interesting. We were all dressed up, but we had to stick around our booths, so it was kind of a working party.

Wallpaper photos sent by customers

I'd like to share a few images I received from two of my customers, both featuring the "Koi Silver" wallpaper pattern. The first one was sent by Carline from Holland. She used the wallpaper as a feature wall behind their bed. It seems to have a peaceful effect. The second and third images were sent by Kristina from Virginia. I love the dark brown fish sculpture with the wallpaper.

Here are a few more pictures from the TCHFM show. It was a great experience, but I'm really glad it's done. It's always a big production to prepare for a show like this. You're tired all the time, and there is no time for cooking a real meal or doing dishes, so your household gets really neglected for a few days. I made some really good contacts at the show, and met a lot of great people. That part is always very nice.

Preparing for a trade show

I've been preparing for the TCHFM (Canadian Home Furnishings Market) and the Interior Design Show for a while. The first one is going to start this Saturday and runs till next Tuesday (January 10-13). Here are a few pictures of the preparations. I have to thank my friend Jodi Sinden, creator of the Home Box filing system, who was crazy enough to help me set up my booth on Tuesday. She drove the van (because I don't drive) and she helped me haul everything onto the show floor. Needless to say we were exhausted. Also like to thank Ed, who's been so helpful and patient through this ordeal. Thanks Hon! :-)

Decorative Pillows

I'm happy to introduce my newest product line: Decorative Pillows. It's been a while since I started designing for pillows and researching possibilities for manufacturing. I have to say I'm really thrilled with the results. Printing turned out beautifully, and the silk front goes really well with the soft polyester suede backing. Rugs Available at Jane Hall

I visited Jane Hall's beautiful store at 2156 Queen Street East last Friday, and I was so impressed by the way she displayed my red Rococo rug. It looks amazing with the red couch and decorative pillows, and a red-gray ottoman. Jane definitely has a great sense of style.

She has the black and white Rococo rug (a black and light gray version) on display as well in her second store at 2010 Queen St. East. A clothing store formerly known as "Ups and Downs" now shares space with Jane, creating a hip and sophisticated "fusion of decor and fashion".

Designer Emma Gardner

Last night I had the opportunity to meet Emma Gardner, a rug designer whose work I admire. One of her showrooms, Modern Weave was hosting an evening with Emma and her husband Patrick. It was nice to chat with her about design and the struggles and difficulties of starting a design business. Ed also had a good chat with Patrick about how to survive your partners venture ideas.
Overall it was a fun night, and I met a lot of interesting people.

I was browsing Vogue's website and I came across Alice Temperley's Fall 2008 (first image) and Anna Sui's Spring 2009 (last three images) collection. I always liked Alice Temperley for her elegant and clean lines and her deco inspired embellishments. Anna Sui's dresses are always youthful, cheery, and full of pattern and colour.

I made this pattern yesterday using motifs from a previous design. I kind of liked the rhythmic flow of the strings of flowers, so I decided to share it with you. It might be a good design on a pillow. I still haven't finished playing with the endless colour possibilities!

I'm posting a new pattern today. I've been on a roll lately! This one is titled "Acorn". As usual, I created several colour ways to see which ones are the best with the design.

Last Thursday we delivered some rugs to Jane Hall's beautiful store. I'm going to update you on that soon. I'm curious how she's going to use them. I can just imagine her lush colours and fabrics arranged in an eye-catching fashion!

Roomy

Yesterday I made a trip to Roomy, a stylish little store on King Street East, in the heart of the modern furniture district. Joanna, the owner used the Koi Silver wallpaper on one of her feature walls in the store. I was happy to see that it turned out beautiful!

It was such a nice sunny day, so I took more pictures of the store. I liked the way they displayed the blue seat with the painting.

I also loved the pillow with reds and pinks on the cream couch.

I've been working on a folk-style pattern and titled it "Country Dove". Ed said it kind of reminds him of Hungarian folk art. I found, that gray and red looked the nicest with the design, but I'll experiment with other combinations as well.

I'm off to visit Roomy. The owner, Joanna wrote me, that they installed the Koi Silver wallpaper in the store.

Nightshade patttern - Playing with colour ways

I spent a bit of time playing with different colour ways for the Nightshade pattern. I thought it looked the best with the circle darker, and the background lighter in any colour combination. Somehow the berries looked the best when they stayed white in any colour way.

Hope you had a great weekend. We had beautiful weather! I always like to take pictures in the fall, because the colours are so lively. Here are some of my favourite sunflower pictures.

I also have a new print to show you called "Nightshade". These plants are intriguing and pretty, but poisonous, so stay away from them. I still want to experiment with different colour ways, but here is what I have now.

The quality is going to stay the same, but the number of styles in my collection will change. I will have 8 designs for now. There will be some exciting new additions along with a few popular existing styles.

Recently, I had the opportunity to meet Jane Hall, a designer and artist with a passion for colour and texture. Visiting Jane's store (located in the Beaches in Toronto) is like stepping into a wonderland of luscious fabrics, eye-catching furniture, rich textures and most of all: colour. Jane's extensive experience in fine art, textile design and interior design enabled her to create an inspiring and sophisticated collection of one of a kind fashion, fine art and home decor pieces.

Canada Day was gorgeous, and I spent a lot of time outside just snapping pictures of our plants and flowers and our new tenant, who lives in our backyard. This little bunny seems to live all by himself in the "yarrow forest". He doesn't seem to be bothered too much by us, so I spent hours just staring at him and taking pictures while he was eating.

A friend of mine sent me a message on Saturday, that I was in the Toronto Star! Ed bought a copy while he was running errands, and when he got home I was really excited to see my Pink Mermaid rug in the Living Section. I scanned in part of the article.

The rug is hanging in the Sustainable Design Area of Toronto's Designers Walk (Dupont Subway station - Dupont and Davenport Road).

If you haven't seen this really nice part of the city, you should definitely check it out. There are several gorgeous designer stores, that sell their products to the trade only, but you can always look.

I love the little sheep mascot of Australian rug company Godfrey Hirst.

Today is the 38th anniversary of the first Earth Day demonstration in the US, when millions of people took to the streets for a cleaner environment, preservation of forests and wildlife, and better air. Although there have been some improvements since 1970, it seems really hard for us to cure our oil dependence as well as our ignorance on environmental issues. Millions of people are still spraying their lawn brainlessly with pesticides to make it look "nicer", throw away batteries on the street, drive "tanks" on the roads, or idle their cars for half an hour while waiting. Maybe when our ignorance is cured, we'll be able to think beyond our manicured front lawn and see the bigger picture.

I'm glad to see, that the design world has taken a greener turn, and you see more and more sustainable materials and eco-friendly products on the market. Sustainable design is a real "trend" right now, and I hope this trend will become the norm with time.

This is a drawing I did a few years ago using coloured pencils. I'm a real fan of the medium, but lately haven't had time to do new artwork....

Recently, I finished two new Beautilicious labels for their body butter. They will be available in two "flavours": Lemon and Lavender. I tried the body lotions, and the scent is very nice. I just received a complimentary copy of Style at Home magazine. Check out page 32. I have a small article on the wallpaper along with a beautifully crafted ceramic green leaf from Michelle Kosoy.

It seems like wallpaper is making a real comeback! I see more and more features in magazines and on design blogs. With more advanced technology, the possibilities are endless. Also, the paper itself is different. Now there are environmentally friendly versions available, which is also much better for your health. Removing the wallpaper used to be a huge issue, and it seems like it contributed to the wallpaper industry's staying in the background for most of the 20th century. I realized how revolutionary my wallpaper substrate is! It actually comes off the wall in one piece!

I've been listening to some great books while working on my drawings (currently listening to The Count of Monte Cristo by Dumas). It's a really good way to keep focused on the creative process, and to stay away from the distractions of the Internet.... It only works with drawings though....

Press: Low Impact Living & Green Home Decorating

I came across two articles on eco-friendly decorating, that listed my wallpaper as a green alternative to traditional wallcovering materials, that contain more synthetic fibre. One article was written by Jessica Jensen for Low Impact Living, and the other was written by Rica for Associated Content.

My wallcoverings contain no PVC, and have a water-soluble top coat, making the substrate more breathable. This material doesn't contribute to Volatile Organic Compounds, which are responsible for decreased indoor air quality.

Elisa Krovblit's article features the return of wallpaper with a modern twist. The new trend is to spice up your décor with a feature wall. The colourful patterns and bold graphics will add a nice accent to your rooms without overpowering them.

I just finished exhibiting at the Metro Home Show. It was tiring, but a great experience. I'm really lucky to have an amazing partner and great friends to help. Without Ed I definitely wouldn't get far. I'm also thankful to his parents Ed Sr. and Barbara for driving "Miss Daisy" around, and my friends Divya Thacker, Jodi Sinden, Karina Montoya Gomez, Jean Kim, Neil Benvenuti and George Mulamoottil for their help and for bringing me food to the show. Finally, I'm feeling a bit better after losing Rusty, but still miss him a lot. I feel, that now I'm ready to focus on my design work again.

I decided to post some designs from one of my all time design heroes: Emilio Pucci. He influenced my designs a lot, when I started creating prints a few years ago. I fell in love with his designs instantly. They were just so different. He would use pinks and yellows together with black and lime green.... I put a little collection together of his designs.

This was a sad Christmas for us. We lost Rusty, our beloved friend and companion to a long and devastating illness: degenerative myelopathy. He was 14 years old. We miss him so much.

Where I come from (Hungary) and I guess in many European countries we celebrate December 6. as St. Nicholas Day. Today, - well, at least once a year - all children clean and shine their boots and put them in the window, hoping that St. Nicholas a.k.a. Santa Claus or "Mikulas" brings them chocolate and other treats. Kids, who don't behave get little golden coloured twig bunches in their boots - symbolizing a good spanking. Actually, everybody seems to get both the treats and the twigs. It's a nice custom, plus an extra opportunity to get treats. :-) Wish we had it in North America.

I'd like to introduce my talented friend and illustrator Mandy Saile. Her whimsical, vibrant coloured pencil and pastel illustrations are full of colour and life, and they often convey a spiritual or inspirational message, or contain hidden symbolism. Mandy feels that art is a powerful way of communicating our ideas and feelings, and making a connection with others. Her subject matter comes from everyday life situations (she has the ability to capture life's precious moments, no matter how small they seem), nature, music, literature and animals. Mandy is a devoted animal rights activist and some day she would love to run a rabbit sanctuary.

Mandy is also a gallery artist and has exhibited her acrylic paintings in North America as well as internationally with great reviews.
